Abstract

Sepn. chamber contg. a mass of magnetisable material permeable to the fluid is filled with the fluid contg. the magnetisable particles. The fluid is then drained from the mass of magnetisable material. During this stage, a magnetic field is maintained in the mass of magnetisable material during a finite period after the filling and before the draining, and during the draining, such that the particles are magnetised and held in the mass of magnetisable materila. Finally, the magnetisable particles are extracted from the magnetisable material. Pref. a chain of sepn. chambers is used. they are caused to pass continuously through a sepn. zone in which a magnetic field is established. A high sepn. efficiency is achieved with a magnetic field of relatively low intensity. The time during which the fluid is maintained in the field before draining starts can be very short, usually 1 minute. Turbulence of the fluid within the magnetisable material is reduced to a min. The fluid can be withdrawn in a partic. uniform and controlled manner. The process is partic. useful for sepg. very small particles having a very low coefft. of magnetisation, e.g. paramagnetic particles. of impurities in kaolinite type materials.
