Abstract
ClO2 is prepd. by reduction of sodium chlorate with HCl in aq. medium, at the b. pt. of the mixt. at a pressure below atmospheric. The reaction mixt. is satd. with NaCl at a H ion concn. of 0.05-0.3 V, at 30-85 degrees C and at a pressure of 20-400mgHg. When NaCl3 and HCl are reacted together two processes can occur simultaneously, NAClO3+2HCl right arrow ClO2 + 1/2HCl2 + H2O + NaCl (1) and NaClO3 + 6HCl right arrow 3Cl2+3H2O+NaCl (2). The above conditions favour the prodn. of ClO2 by (1) rather than (2).
