Abstract
Method of producing anhydrous sodium sulfite, characterized in that it comprises: a) forming a saturated aqueous solution of sodium sulfite containing less than about 3 ppm of dissolved iron, based on the solution, and adjusting the pH of said solution, based on the solution, and adjust the pH of said solution within the range of about 6.5 to about 7.6; b) introducing into said solution substantially anhydrous sodium carbonate simultaneously with or without mother liquor from which crystals of sodium metabisulfite have been obtained by crystallization, and a gas stream containing sulfur dioxide, mutually proportioned in such a way as to maintain the pH of said solution within the range of about 6.5 to about 7.6, while maintaining the temperature of said solution above about 35ºC to form a supersion of anhydrous sodium sulfite crystals; and c) separating anhydrous sodium sulfite crystals from said suspension.
