Abstract

Boron steels with improved hardness and strength in the quenched, or carburosed and quenched states, due to the optimum amt. of soluble boron (Bs) and insol. boron (Bins). The steels contain 30-100 ppm total boron (Bt), 40-220 ppm. N2, and an Al equiv. (So) of 200-800, where So=Al + V/1.9 + Nb/3.4 + Ta/6.7 where Al, V, Nb and Ta are their ppm. and V, Nb, Ta are optional elements and also that the steel meets the relationship: 10N2-17Bt-So=-300 plus-or-minus 200. The pref. steels contain 30-60 ppm. Bt, 40150 ppm-N2, and So 200-400 and Ti and Zr are absent. In the pref. steel making process, the steel is de-oxidised and then the amt. of Bt, N2 and Al adjusted, and possibly the V, Nb, Ta and neither Ti nor Zr must be added. Prods. may be used in construction steels, case-hardened steels or heat-treated steels, where the new steels show improved hardenability and strength.
