Abstract
Improvements in heating elements, of the type comprising a pair of electrodes and a sheet member (A) comprising an organic polymer and electrically conductive particles dispersed in the polymer, in an amount sufficient to render the member electrically conductive with resistivity greater than 10ohm.cm at room temperature; characterized in that the electrodes are flexible sheet electrodes that (i) are connected to opposite faces of said sheet member; (ii) are substantially coplanar with said sheet member, (iii) are composed of a material that has a resistivity of less than 10 ohm.cm at room temperature; and (iv) they are adapted to be connected to an external energy source to make current pass through said laminar member; and in that said laminar member (A) and said laminar electrodes have a plurality of openings through their thickness, the openings being: (a) in the case of a heating element that is not deformed in the plane thereof, the openings are of a size, shape and distribution such that they allow at least one of the dimensions of the element in the plane thereof to be altered at the melting point of the polymer in a percentage that is at least 30%, based on the original dimension, without complete rupture of the electrode at any point, the dimensional change being accommodated by a change in the shape of the openings; or (b) in the case of a heating element that has undergone deformation in the plane thereof, the openings are those obtained by deformation of openings whose size, shape and distribution allow at least one of the dimensions of the element in the plane of the It alters at the melting point of the polymer by a percentage that is at least 30%, based on the original dimension, without complete rupture of the electrode at any point, accommodating the dimensional change through a change in the shape of the openings.
