Abstract
Method for producing a palatable, non-toxic ruminant feed product, comprising the steps of: mixing a predetermined quantity of a non-gelatinized edible feed material containing starch chosen from the group consisting of corn, sorghum, millet, cassava, potatoes, yams, rice, starch, corn, potato starch, wheat starch, arrowroot, turnips, rudabagus, and mixtures thereof, a quantity of water sufficient to allow the gelatinization of at least a portion of said material, when the latter is subjected to high heat and pressure, a certain amount of non-protein nitrogenous substance characterized by the properties of being hydrolyzable to ammonia by rumen microorganisms and which is then convertible to microbial protein, and an adequate amount of a lipid material sufficient to facilitate the cooking and treatment of said mixture without appreciable concomitant decrease in protein synthesis der ivable of the feed product; Continuously moving the mixture to and through a treatment zone, while stirring the mixture and subjecting it to a source of heat and high compression and shear forces, for a period of time sufficient to gelatinize at least a portion of the feed material in the presence of said water, while the feed material is intimately crumbled and reacted with the non-protein nitrogenous substance, providing a reacted composition; and abruptly withdrawing pressure on said reacted composition, as it continuously exits the treatment zone, to produce an expanded and gelatinized feed product.
