Abstract

Procedure for the preparation of a non-toxic, practically neutral pH feed for ruminants, characterized in that it comprises the steps of mixing together a predetermined quantity of a food material bearing edible, ungelled starch chosen from the group consisting of corn, sorghum, barley, oats, wheat, ene, and silage, a predetermined amount of at least one non-protein nitrogenous substance, chosen from the group consisting of urea, biuret, ethylene urea, and ammonium carbamate, and a predetermined amount of an inert liquid-absorbing substance such as it is the bentonite; the moisture content of the mixture being less than approximately 15% by weight, and the amount of said non-protein nitrogenous substance being comprised between 15% and 47.5% of the weight of the mixture, so that the food product resulting has a total protein equivalent of the order of 50% to 100% by weight; enable a confined tour; introducing the mixture at room temperature through one end of said confined path; compressing the mixture throughout the course of said stroke with increasing pressures to progressively heat the mixture by friction heat only to a temperature of 126.6ºC to 160.0ºC; and then reduce the pressure on the mixture almost instantaneously at the end of said route at atmospheric pressure to obtain a dilated and gelatinized product with a moisture content of less than 13%.
