Abstract
Improvements in shock absorbing apparatus, of the kind in which compressed gas opposes the longitudinal compression of the shock absorbing apparatus, which also provides a recovery force, liquid absorbing means also being incorporated which, at least under some conditions working, provide additional resistance to compression of the shock absorbing apparatus and dampen recovery, the liquid displaced through said shock absorbing means of the shock absorbing apparatus acting to displace a moving wall and thereby cause compression of the gas that it is contained within a closed space, characterized in that the space containing the gas comprises two chambers arranged so that the gas from one of the chambers always acts on the mobile wall, and valve means are provided to control communication between the two cameras, the media being forced alvular to a closed position and being automatically opened to provide communication between the two chambers when the shock absorbing apparatus has been longitudinally compressed by a predetermined amount and being automatically closed again when the length of the shock absorbing apparatus is extended so that it exceeds the difference between the maximum length and said predetermined quantity.
