Abstract
A method of preparing homogeneous thermosetting powder paint compositions comprising (A) pass a liquid paint composition formed by a solution of 1) a copolymer containing crosslinkable functional groups and having a glass transition temperature in the range of 40ºC to 90ºC and an average molecular weight between about 1,000 and approx. 15,000. 2) pigment and, 3) inert solvent, through an evaporation zone comprising a winding path of relatively narrow cross section, extended in a lateral direction to the direction of the flow of said solution through said zone; (B) heating said solution while it is within said evaporation zone to a temperature: 1) above the melting point of said copolymer but below the point at which degradation takes place; 2) above the temperature at which the aforementioned inert solvent begins to evaporate, thus causing a current turbulence of said solution within said evaporation zone and thus maintaining an intimately bound homogeneous mixture of the vapors of the volatile components of said solution and the dispersed particles of non-volatile components of said solution; (C) passing said homogeneous mixture from said evaporation zone to a separation zone and maintaining, meanwhile, the temperature in said separation zone above the melting point of said copolymer, giving rise to the separation of said vapor from solvent and allowing the non-volatile components to be collected in the molten state; (D) separating said non-volatile components from said separation zone. (E) cooling said non-volatile components to form a solid material, (F) granulating said solid material to form uniformly pigmented particles, (G) mixing a crosslinking agent for said copolymer with said particles. (H) melting said mixture at a temperature higher than the melting point of said particles and said crosslinking agent but lower than the point where crosslinking takes place, thus obtaining a melt having the crosslinking agent uniformly dispersed therein; (I) cooling said melt to form a solid material and, (J) spraying said solid material to form a powder.
