Abstract
Process consists in (A) heating a soln. consisting of (1) a copolymer (pret. acrylic copolymer) contg. cross linkable functional gps. having a Tg of 40-90 degrees C and an average mol. wt. of nearly =1000-15000, (2) a pigment and (3) an inert solvent, in an evaporation zone to evaporate the solvent; (B) maintaining the temp. in the evaporation zone (i) at above the fusion temp. of the polymer but below the degradation temp. and (ii) at a temp. at which the solvent evaporates, (C) passing the soln. from the evaporation zone into a separation zone, maintaining the temp. at above the fusion temp. of the copolymer and removing solvent vapour and recovering the non-volatile components of the powder coating in the molten, (D) removing from the separation zone, (E) cooling to form a solid matl., (F) granulating the solid matl. to form uniformly pigmented particles, (G) mixing a linking agent with the particles, (H) mixing at a temp. above a fusion temp. of the particles and the cross linking agent, but below the cross linking temp. to form a molten mass with homogeneously dispersed cross linking agent, (I) cooling the molten mass to form a solid matl. and (J) pulverising the mass to form a powder. Process gives powder coatings with excellent properties and wide colour range.
