Abstract

Procedure for obtaining a new 2-pyridone derivative, specifically the 2-hydroxynicotinic acid (2', 6-dimethyl) anilide of the formula **(See formula)** characterized by the fact that a 2-halonicotinic acid or a halide or ester thereof is used as raw material, which is condensed with 2,6-xylidine at high temperature in the presence of a solvent or without solvent and with excess of 2, 6-xylidine, to obtain either directly the desired product (2-hydroxynicotinic acid amide) or the intermediate product (2-halonicotinic acid amide) which, in a second stage of the process, is transformed into 2-hydroxyderivative by treatment with an alkaline or alkaline earth hydroxide in an anhydrous medium at a temperature above 120ºC, using especially suitable solvent as dimethyl sulfoxide or dimethylformamide and, in general, any polar solvent with a high boiling point.
