Abstract

To obtain cellulosic fibres containing enzymes, capable of displaying a catalytic activity in enzymatic reactions, a substituted cellulose derivative is dissolved in a water-insoluble solvent. An aqueous solution of the enzyme is then added to the solution, and the emulsion is subjected to spinning and coagulation conditions. Finally, the fibre obtained is treated with a reducing agent, in order to remove the substituent under operating conditions which do not damage the enzyme. The substituted cellulose derivative can, for example, be nitrocellulose. In this case, the reducing agent is a solution of ammonium sulphide. The said substituted cellulose derivative is dissolved in a water-insoluble solvent selected from normal-butyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, methyl amyl ketone and ethyl amyl ketone. The enzyme used is selected from uricase, invertase, lactase, acylase, transaminase, glucose oxidase, catalase, papain, tryptophan synthetase and penicillin amidase. This gives cellulose fibres having a permeability very much higher than that of the same fibres based on substituted cellulose.
