A procedure for the preparation of a dihalo-s-triazines that responds to the formula: **(See formula)** where X is a halogen atom, preferably chlorine or bromine and R3 is a heteroaromatic group attached through a carbon atom to the triazine ring, where R3 is: (a) a substituted furyl group in which at least one substituent is selected from lower alkoxy, lower acyl, nitro, amino or halogen; (b) a substituted thienyl group in which at least one substituent is selected from lower alkoxy, lower acyl, nitro, amino, halogen or a 2-chloro-4-thienyl group; (c) a benzothienyl or benzofuryl group optionally substituted with one or more lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower acyl, nitro, amino or halogen groups; or (d) a pyrrolyl or indolyl group optionally substituted on the nitrogen atom with lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, lower carboxyalkyl, or lower phenylalkyl and optionally substituted on one or more carbon atoms of the ring with lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, acyl lower, phenyl, nitro, amino or halogen, the term "lower" meaning groups containing up to 6 carbon atoms, the process of which consists of halogenating the 4,6-dioxo compound corresponding to formula VI above.
