Abstract
A process for the preparation of a segmented thermoplastic copolyester elastomer, comprising a multiplicity of periodic, intralinear, long-chain ester units derived from a dicarboxylic acid or its ester-forming equivalents and a long-chain glycol or its forming equivalents of ester and short chain ester units derived from a dicarboxylic acid or its ester-forming equivalents and a low-molecular-weight diol or its ester-forming equivalents, said ester units being bound to the tail through ester linkages and prepared by reaction of: (A) one or more dicarboxylic acids with a molecular weight less than about 300 or their ester-forming equivalents; (B) one or more low molecular weight diols less than about 250 or their ester forming equivalents and (C) one or more poly (alkylene oxide) glycols with a molecular weight of about 150-250 and a carbon to oxygen around 1,5-2,4 or its ester-forming equivalents, characterized in that 30-65% of the weight of the copolyester is made up of units of the 1,4-butylene terephthalate ester and 0-20% of the weight of the copolyester consists of additional ester units that form a homopolymer in the range of fiber-forming molecular weights, with a melting point of at least 100ºC, said additional ester units being present in a proportion of at least 6% by weight when less than 45% by weight of the copolyester consists of units of the 1,4-butylene terephthalate ester.
