Abstract

A method of extracting hydrogen fluoride from a gas containing it, to produce calcium fluoride and hydrogen fluoride-free gas, comprising the steps of: (a) sweeping said hydrogen fluoride-containing gas in a sweep zone with an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide, and recovering, from said scanning zone, a gas free of hydrogen fluoride and an aqueous stream containing alkali metal fluoride, (b) mixing at least a part of said aqueous stream containing alkali metal fluoride with a calcium hydroxide containing medium, in a regeneration zone where the amount of said aqueous alkali metal fluoride containing stream is in excess relative to the stoichiometric amount of alkali metal fluoride re intended to react with said medium containing calcium hydroxide, and to recover a liquid phase of aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and a solid phase containing calcium fluoride; (c) recovering said solid phase as said calcium fluoride product; and (d) passing at least a part of said liquid phase to said sweep zone.
