Abstract

Improvements to the self-canceling switches for direction indicators, characterized in that the switch comprises a body for attachment to a vehicle, a drive member movably mounted on the body to close, in service, indicator light circuits, a ratchet member having a plurality of protruding fingers, said ratchet member being rotatable and movable relative to the body in a direction transverse to the direction in which the actuation member is movable, means in said actuation member for displacing said ratchet member from a withdrawn position to an extended position when the actuating member is moved from a neutral position to one or the other position of a pair of operating positions to opposite sides of the neutral position, elastic means acting on the ratchet member to oppose said displacement of the same by the organ of ac drive, whereby the actuating member is forced into its neutral position, and retaining means in the actuating member with which the ratchet member can cooperate when the actuating member is in any of its operating positions to maintain the organ actuator in its operating position and the ratchet member in its extended position, such being the arrangement that, in service, when a hammer associated with the steering shaft strikes a protruding finger while moving in a first direction, the ratchet is advanced step by step to present a different finger without disengaging said retention means, while when the hammer strikes the finger while it is moving in the opposite direction, the ratchet member is disengaged from said retention means.
