Abstract

Method for producing new derivatives of tryptophan, in forms L, DL and D, which can be represented by the formula: **(See formula)** where R can be: (1) - a phenyl, mono- or poly-substituted group in the ortho, meta or para position with substituents of the class consisting of: Cl, Br, F, I, CN, NO2, NH2, OH, OCH3, COOH, COOC2H5, CH3, C2H5, CF3; (2) -a mono- or poly-substituted hydroxybenzyl group, the substituents being selected from the class indicated in (1), characterized in that tryptophan is condensed with a chloride having the formula R-COC1 (where R has the meaning indicated above with the exception of the substituent COOH) in aqueous medium at a temperature of -5ºC to + 10ºC, in the presence of a hydrochloric acid acceptor consisting of the hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, or a tertiary organic base, and because the reaction product is recovered from the aqueous phase.
