Abstract
Partial cooling of melting sotck in revolving cylindrical furnace is effected after appreciable reduction by charging at least a part of solid reducing agent with a large amount of volatile constituents into the adjoining furnace zone extensively roasting the reducing agent contg. the volatile constituents as far as the discharge end, separating roasted reducing agent from discharge material and recycling reducing agent to the revolving cylindrical furnace. Partial cooling may be effected at 500-800 (esp., 600-770) degrees C or pref. to a temp. Curie pt. with magnetic separation of Fe sponge from discharge material, directly after discharge from furnace, pref. in a zone having 20 (5-15)% of total furnace length.
