Abstract
Improvements introduced in an emulsion polymerization process for the preparation of a particulate material, whose improvements are characterized by the combination of: (1) forming a crosslinked acrylic polymer core by polymerization of a main amount, a monofunctional monoacrylate and a small amount crosslinking agent of a difunctional or trifunctional monomer containing two or more unconjugated terminal ethylenic groups (2) to introduce into the polymerization of said ester and said difunctional or trifunctional monomer, when said polymerization is between 50 and 90% of the complete polymerization, shell-forming monomers of a mixture of methyl methacrylate and a residue selected from monomers copolymerizable with methyl methacrylate and selected from monofunctional monoacrylates, difunctional monoacrylates, diacrylates, monovinyl hydrocarbons, divinyl hydrocarbons, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid and (3) continue said polymerization until the polymerization of said ester and said difunctional or trifunctional monomer is essentially complete, an intermediate layer has been formed essentially from the monomers used to form said nucleus and the monomers used to form an external crust, and until said external layer formed essentially by said crust-forming monomers surrounds said nucleus.
