Abstract

Method for preparing disazo dyes having the structure: **(See formula)** where R represents -H, -CH3, -OCH3 or Cl; M represents -H, -Na, -K or -NH4; and Z represents a terminal group of structure I, II or III, where structure I is: **(See formula)** wherein R1 represents -H or -CH3; R2 represents -H, -CH3 or -OCH3; y represents -CH3 or -C2H5; and where structure II represents: **(See formula)** wherein R4 represents -C2H4OH, -C2H4CN, -CH3, -C2H5 or -CH (CH3) 2; and R6 represents -H, -CH3 or Cl; and where structure III is: **(See formula)** where R7 represents -H or -CH3; which method comprises coupling orthanilic acid, methanilic acid, sulfanilic acid, toluidinmonosulfonic acids, anisidinmonosulfonic acids or a chloromethanilic acid with Cleves 1.6 or Cleves 1.7 acid; re-azotate the monoazo intermediate; and: (a) when the terminal group is to have structure I, the rediazotized monoazo intermediate compound is coupled with a hydroxybenzene, and the resulting intermediate compound is alcoholized with a usual alcoholizing agent; (b) when the terminal group is to have structure II, the rediazotized monoazo intermediate compound is coupled with a phenylamine of the corresponding structure; and (c) when the terminal group is to have structure III, the rediazotized monoazo intermediate compound is coupled with N-phenyl periacid or an N-tolyl periacid; and recovering the resulting dyes in the form of an alkali metal salt which, if desired, can be used as such or converted, in the usual way, to other forms of salt or to the free acid.
