Procedure for preparing 1,4-benzodiazepine derivatives of the general formula: **(See formula)** wherein the radical R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the radicals R2 and R3 each represent a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical or a lower alkyl radical substituted with an amine or alcoholic group, in which the radicals R2 and R3 can also together represent a polymethyl chain or a polymethyl chain comprising a heteroatom, for example oxygen or nitrogen, to jointly constitute a saturated heterocyclic group, such as, for example, the pyrrolidine, piperidine, morpholino or piperazine group, characterized in that a diazepine compound of the formula is reacted: **(See formula)** in which R1 has the meaning indicated above, in an inert solvent, with phenyl chlorocarbonate, at a temperature between 0 and 70ºC, in the presence of a suitable hydrochloric acid acceptor, according to the scheme: **(See formula)** with formation of a carbonic ester of the following formula (III), which is reacted with an amine compound of formula (IV) indicated in the following equation: **(See formula)** where R2 and R3 have the meanings indicated above.
