A method of preparing new hypoglycemic sulfonylurea compounds of the general formula. **(See formula)** wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of: (a) lower alcohol, lower alkenyl, and lower alkoxyalkoyl; (b) lower phenialcohyl; (c) cyclohexylalkyl lower, cycloheptylmethyl, cycloheptylethyl and cyclooctylmethyl; (dicyclohexenyl and cyclohexenyl lower alkyl; (e) cycloalkyl having 5 to 8 carbon atoms; (f) endoalkylene-cyclohexyl, endoalkylene-cyclohexenyl, endoalkylene-cyclohexylmethyl and endoalkylene-cyclohexenylmethyl having one or two carbonyl chain atoms; (g) lower alcohol-cyclohexyl, dialkoyl lower-cyclohexyl, trialkoyl lower-cyclohexyl, lower alcohol-cyclohexenyl and dialkoyl lower-cyclohexenyl (h) lower alkoxy-cyclohexyl and (i) adamantyl and nortricyclyl; Y represents a straight or branched hydrocarbon chain from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, preferably -CH2 CH2-; R2 is selected from the group consisting of (a) hydrogen; (b) lower alcohol, lower alkoxyalkoyl and lower alkenyl; (c) lower alkoxy, lower alkenoxy, lower alcoholylthio, lower alkoxyalkoxy and benzoyloxy and (d) halogen and trifluoromethyl; U is a chain of 2 to 4 carbon atoms contained in the residues benzofuran, dihydrobenzofuran -benzopyran; dihydrobenzopyran-, dihydro- or tetrahydroben-zoxepin-, and each of R3 and R4 is selected from the group consisting of (a) hydrogen; (b) lower alcohol, lower alcohol, lower alkenyl and phenyl and (c) lower alkoxy, lower alkenoxy and benzyloxy, or R3 and R4 may together form a double bond with an oxygen atom outside the heterocyclic ring, or salts thereof Physiologically acceptable, characterized by hydrolyzing the benzenesulfonyl-isourea ethers, benzenesulfonyl-isothiourea ethers, benzenesulfonylparabamic acid derivatives, benzenesulfonylguanidines, or correspondingly substituted benzenesulfonyl-haloformic amidines.
