Abstract

A procedure for preparing a 3-methyl-4- (5-tetrazolyl) - δ 3-cefam of the formula **(See formula)** where Y is selected from the group consisting of **(See formula)** wherein R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkanoyloxymethyl having three to eight carbon atoms, 1-alkanoyloxyethyl having 4 to 7 carbon atoms, methoxymethyl and phthalidyl; R1 is selected from the group consisting of R2 and the nitrogen-protecting group of tetrazolylpenam; R is selected from the group consisting of (a) hydrogen, 2,2,2-trichloroethoxycarbonyl, 2,2,2-tribromoethoxycarbonyl, benzyloxybenzyl; (b) 2-phenylacetyl, 2-phenoxyacetyl, 2-amino-2phenylacetyl; and (c) **(See formula)** wherein R3, R4 and R5 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy having one to four carbon atoms, and phenyl, characterized by heating a 6-amino- or 6-amino-substituted-2,2-dimethyl-3- (5-tetrazolyl) penam sulfoxide of the formula **(See formula)** in the presence of an acid reaction substance at a temperature of 80ºC to 175ºC for a period of time sufficient to effect the conversion thereof.
