Abstract
A method of making dyes that are made up of free acids and water-soluble salts of the sulfonic group of a compound that has the structure: ** (See formula) ** where R represents H, CH3 or OCH3; A represents ** (See formula) ** and wherein the azo nitrogen atom is attached to the carbon atom of the naphthalene ring, which comprises whipping: 1-naph tilamin-4-sulfonic acid, 1-naphthylamin-5-sulfonic acid, 1-naphthylamin-6- acid sulfonic, 1-naphthylamin-7-sulfonic acid, or 2-naphthylamin-6-sulfonic acid; coupling the diazonium salt with o-anisidine, tresidine, or 2,5-dimethoxy aniline, to form an intermediate monoazo compound or alternatively coupling the diazonium salt with o-anisidine- (o) methylsulfonate or hydrolyzing the compound resulting from the coupling to form the intermediate monozoic compound; diazotize the intermediate monozoic compound again; couple the diazonium salt thus formed with: 2-naphthol-6-sulfonic acid, 1-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid, 1-naphthol-3-sulfonic acid, 1-naphthol-5-sulfonic acid, or 2-naphthol acid -4-sulfonic, and couple the resulting diazo compound using a demethylation procedure.
