Abstract
A method of making copper-plated steel wire, which is particularly intended for use in CO 2 gas-shielded welding, comprises greasing steel wire rod and drawing it through a plurality of drawing dies, passing an electric current through the wire to anneal it, pickling the wire, rinsing and then electroless copper plating the wire in a bath consisting mainly of copper sulphate solution, applying drawing grease to the plated wire, drawing it through one or more drawing dies and winding it on to spools. A plant for carrying out the method comprises a multidrum drawing device having a plurality of dies each preceded by a vessel containing drawing grease through which the steel wire passes, an annealing device comprising two Pb contact baths of opposite polarity the wire passing from one to the other and then by a longer path returning to the first, each bath being insulated from the other, an electrolytic pickling bath, a spraying device for rinsing the wire, a container for the copper sulphate solution, a dip drawing device comprising a vessel filled with a soap-oil emulsion in which drawing dies are immersed and a coiler. A roller carrying a plurality of turns of the wire is disposed between the annealing device and the pickling bath to delay cooling of the wire. Wire is fed to the plant via an uncoiler from a double reel which carries two coils of wire the wire ends being butt welded to each other in known manner.
