Abstract

Improvements in the bearing manufacturing process, in relation to the strength and resistance to fatigue thereof, these bearings being bimetallic, characterized in that said manufacturing process comprises the following phases; a) direct bonding to an aluminum alloy layer steel backing containing 2 to 8% silicon, 0.5 to 4% cadmium, 0.5 to 0.15 copper, 0 0.1 to 0.2% magnesium and aluminum balancer, to form a composite bearing material; b) heating said bearing material to a temperature of at least 900ºF (500ºC), but not exceeding 975ºF (541ºC); c) maintaining said material at said temperature for at least a period of 15 seconds; d) rapid cooling of the bearing material in a fluid medium having a maximum temperature of 100ºF (55.5ºC); e) formation of the bearing to the desired shape; and f) heating the bearing to a temperature of about 350º F (194ºC) for a period of about 12 hours to effect precipitation hardening.
