Abstract

A fuel assembly comprises an array of parallel elongated fuel elements, a plurality of elongate hollow tubular members containing control elements strategically located among the fuel elements and composed of a low neutron capture metal, e.g. Zircaloy, and grid members longitudinally spaced along the tubular members and composed of a metal, e.g. stainless steel, different from that of the tubular members, with retaining members engaging the tubular members at the grid openings, and means formed integrally with the grid, tubular or retaining members co-operating with the other members to retain the tubular members in position in the grid members. As shown in Fig. 6, each intermediate grid member is retained in position by means of two stainless steel sleeves 44a, 44b surrounding each of the tubular members 18 in the openings 32 in the grid structure. The sleeves 44a, 44b are brazed to the grid straps 30. Protrusions 46 in the tubular member 18 engage the sleeves 44a, 44b immediately above and below the sleeves, thereby retaining the grid in position. In another construction (Fig. 7) a tab extension 48 on a grid strap 30 is captured by a spot weld between the Zircaloy tube 18 and a Zircaloy clip 50, the latter being spot-welded to the tube 18 above the tab. The clip 50 is stamped to provide a base which fits through a hole punched in the tab 48, the base being spot-welded to the tube 18. The upper end structure or nozzle (12) of the fuel assembly (Fig. 1, not shown) includes an upstanding flange (17) to which leaf-springs (19) are clamped. The springs co-operate with a coreplate (not shown) to permit expansion of the fuel assembly, but prevent the assembly from being moved upwardly by hydraulic forces. Dowel pins (not shown) extend into diagonally disposed openings (25) in the flange to provide lateral support for the fuel assembly.
