Abstract

A hydrocarbon solution of oil-soluble sulphonic acids containing a minor amount of sulphuric acid is purified by contacting said solution with a macroreticular ion exchange resin having a styrene-divinylbenzene matrix to remove the sulphuric acid therefrom. The sulphonic acid solutions may be obtained by sulphonating synthetic hydrocarbon feedstocks in the presence of an inert diluent oil. Specified macroreticular ion exchange resins have a pore radius in the range 70 to 1200 A , a surface area from 18 to 71 square metres/gram and an apparent density from 0À555 to 0À891 grams/c.c. Examples are given in which alkyl benzene sulphonates are purified on various resins.
