Abstract

Magnetic bodies are obtained by compacting, before, after or during magnetization, a powdered rare-earth-cobalt compound of the formula M 5 R where M=Co or a combination of Co with one or more of Fe, Ni and Cu and R is one, or more lanthanide, yttrium or thorium. The material is reduced in coercivity by application of a pressure of hydrogen gas until it contains at least 0À2 moles per mole of M 5 R before magnetization. ,In an example SmCo 5 is pulverized, orientated in a magnetic field, compressed without a binder to form a block and the block was subjected to a hydrogen pressure of 30 atmospheres, and magnetized.
