Pumped gas which escapes from the pumping chamber within bellows 4, 6 is prevented from reaching the atmosphere by sealing bellows 28, 29 extending between respective casings 1, 2 and pistons 3, 5 actuating the pumping bellows. The pistons 3, 5 are actuated by a connecting rod 9 having a piston 10 movable in a cylinder 11. Reciprocation of the piston 10 is effected by pressure air admitted alternately to the ends of the cylinder 11 by a distributing valve 13 controlled by pilot valves 21, 22 actuated by cams 25, 26 on the rod 9. If any of the bellows perforate, a change in pressure occurs in the casing 1 or 2, the pressure change being detected by manometers 34, 35. The manometers may be arranged to stop further pumping when they detect a pressure change.
