Abstract
Longitudinally resilient suspension means for a vehicle wheel R comprise a wheel carrier pivotally connected to the outer end M of a transverse arm 3 having a hub 3a mounted on a longitudinal shaft 1 by means of elastomeric sleeves 6, 8 disposed in opposite ends of the hub, the sleeve 6 being arranged to prevent any substantial radial movement of that end of the hub 3a relative to the shaft 1 but permit inclination of the hub relative to the shaft about a centre C in or near a transverse plane through the outer end M of the arm, and the sleeve 8 being arranged to permit radial movement of the other end of the hub relative to the shaft to absorb longitudinal shocks on the wheel R. The sleeve 6 has on its outer surface separate cells 7 filled with grease to resist local compression under radial forces, and the sleeve 8 has circumferential beads 11 defining channels around which grease can flow to accommodate radial deflection. Flanges 9, 10 on the sleeves 6, 8 position the hub 3a between bearing surfaces on a body member 2, and annular friction members 9a, 10a are interposed between the sleeves and the hub. The circumferential beads 11 may have a cross-section which is part-circular or has a sharp angular apex. The external diameter and width of the beads 11 may vary along the length of the sleeve 8. In particular the size of the beads 11 may decrease in a direction away from the centre C to obtain uniform stressing of the sleeve 8.
