Abstract

A device responsive to liquid flow comprises a metal float 3 within a duct 2 with electrical contacts 4 situated within the duct and magnetic attraction existing between the float and at least one of the contacts. The float may be permanently magnetized and the contacts be made from magnetizable material. Alternatively at least one of the contacts may be permanently magnetized or lie within the field of a permanent magnet, electromagnet, or electrical coil. In Fig. 2 a plurality of ducts within a block 1, monitor a plurality of liquid flows e.g. at several lubrication points in an engine. The contacts comprise two rods laid alongside the ducts with a part surface of each rod projecting into each duct. Failure of a liquid flow in a duct allows the float to bridge the contacts and complete the alarm circuit connected across terminals 7 of the rods. The magnetic attraction between the float and the contacts accelerates the fall of the float and also enables the film of liquid adhering to the contacts to be removed. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the rods are connected by an insert of insulation material to the poles of a permanent magnet.
