Abstract

An aqueous solution for cleaning Al comprises (a) 0À5-15 wt. % caustic alkali (b) 0À005-0À2% alkali-soluble salt of a polycarboxylic acid having more than 10 carboxyl groups in the molecule, and (c) 0À003 to 0À1% of alkaline earth metal ions. (a) may be NaOH or KOH, (c) may be Ba, Sr, or preferably Ca, and (b) is a polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, a salt of a copolymer of ethylene with maleic, acrylic, or methacrylic acid or a polyamino polycarboxylic acid salt. The composition may also contain 0À005-0À2% of a hydroxy- or amino-phosphonic acid with at least 2 P atoms, e.g. a 1-hydroxy- or 1-amino-alkane-1, 1-diphosphonic acid or a 1-aminoaryl-1, 1-diphosphonic acid or an aminomethylene phosphonic acid or a salt of any of these, a polyol such as mannitol, sorbitol, and/or a polyhydroxy carboxylic acid, e.g. gluconic, heptagluconic acid or their borocomplexes or conventional additives such as ortho- and poly-phosphates, carbonates, borates, silicates and surface-active substances.
