Abstract

A sizing composition for yarns of nylon, polyester, polyacrylics and cellulose acetate is prepared by slurrying polyvinyl alcohol in water at a temperature of from 10 to 30 C. for 10-20 minutes, adding polyacrylic acid and heating the mixture to a temperature of from 65 to 85 C. adding water-soluble pine oil (stabilizer) and then cooking the combined mixture at a temperature of from 75 to 95 C. for 20-40 minutes. The polyvinyl alcohol should have a viscosity of from 15 to 25 centipoises and a degree of hydrolysis of from 84 to 100%, and the acrylic acid a molecular weight between 25,000 and 100,000. Conventional additives such as flame retardants, softeners, penetrants and plasticizers may be incorporated in the composition.
