Abstract

An assembly for use in a lubricant-producing system comprising at least two members, members A and B, having facing surfaces movable with respect to one another, the facing surface of member A essentially consisting of: a) an alloy of 11-15 percent carbon atoms, 1.5-3 percent silicon atoms, the remainder being substantially all iron and having a Vickers hardness index of at least 150, b) an alloy of 80 percent iron atoms as minimum and at least 1 atom, percent carbon and with a Vickers hardness index of at least 200, or c) an alloy of 50-79 percent iron atoms and at least 1 percent carbon atom and with a Vickers hardness index of at least 400, being less than 6 percent atoms the sum of any cobalt and nickel that could be found in said alloys b) and c) and being made up of at least half the weight of the rest of said alloys at ations b) and c) from the elements chromium, molybdenum manganese and tungsten that are present as carbide (s) or in a fully hardened solid solution; the facing surface of member B consisting essentially of a 10-90% by volume mixture of an alloy of at least 6 percent atoms of an element selected from molybdenum or tungsten, at least 10% by volume of the alloy an intermetallic compound of the element, the Vickers hardness index of said compound being 550-1800, the coefficient of friction of the alloy of member B not being greater than 0.25 against the surface of member A and, correspondingly 90- 10% by volume of a material with a Vickers hardness index lower than that of the B-member alloy, the strength and adhesive properties of the material being sufficient to support the alloy within it.
