Abstract
An assembly for associating a lubricant-producing system, comprising at least two members, members A and B, having facing surfaces movable with respect to each other, the facing surface of member A essentially consisting of: a) a alloy of 11-15 percent carbon atoms, 1.5-3 percent silicon atoms, the rest being substantially all iron, and having a Vickers hardness index of at least 150, b) an alloy containing at least 80 atoms percent iron and at least 1 percent carbon atom and having a Vickers hardness index of at least 200, or c) an alloy of 50-79 percent iron atoms and at least 1 percent carbon atom and having a Vickers hardness index of at least 400, the sum of any cobalt and nickel found in alloys b) and c) being less than 6 atoms per cent and consisting of at least half the weight of the rest of the alloys ones b) and c) by chromium, molybdenum, manganese or tungsten, which are present as carbide (s) or in a fully hardened solid solution; the facing surface of member B consisting essentially of an alloy of at least 6 percent of an element formed by molybdenum or tungsten, at least 10% by volume of the alloy being an intermetallic compound of the element, the index of Vickers hardness of the compound from 55 to 1800 and, if present, any matrix in the alloy containing the compound having a Vickers hardness index lower than that of the compound and the coefficient of dry friction of the surface of member B against the surface of member A.
