Abstract

Volatile material is evaporated from a polymer mixture by feeding it through pipe 16 and orifice 18 into a chamber where it flows in the form of a viscous film over heated, substantially-cylindrical walls 12, 13, the film being subjected to stirring and redistribution by spirally-grooved rollers 20, 21 mounted on a shaft 23 which is eccentric to the axis of the chamber. The apparatus may be used for the removal of ethylene glycol in the final polymerization step in the production of linear polyesters. The removal of monomer from polyamides, produced by polymerization of caprolactam, is referred to. Shaft 23 is driven by a prime mover (not shown) via pulley 28, shaft 25 and the sun gear 29 of a planetary gearing whereby the rollers 20, 21 rotate and revolve in contact with walls 12, 13. These walls are heated by circulating a heat-carrier through jacket 15. Vapours of volatile material are withdrawn through outlet 43, which may be connected to a vacuum pump. The treated material is withdrawn through pipe 17. The gear-housing 40 is separated from the treatment chamber by diaphragm 41 and nitrogen is introduced into housing 40 through passage 42. Figs. 9 to 11 (not shown) show an apparatus which has two concentric stationary cylinders, a spirally-grooved roller which revolves within the inner cylinder, and a rotary, spirally-grooved cylinder which revolves around the inner surface of the outer stationary cylinder and also around the outer surface of the inner stationary cylinder.
