Abstract
642,354. Making hollow-ware. BLISS, CO., E. W. April 12, 1948, No. 10093. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Curling and beading; corrugating.-A machine for curling and beading closures or caps for receptacles comprises a series of mandrels 9 mounted for rotation in a turret 5 rotatable about a horizontal axis, each mandrel being rotated by engagement with a frictional driving surface 16. The turret 5 is secured on a shaft 4 driven, through reduction gearing 46, by a motor 45 and has a series of brackets 7 in which stub shafts 8 are radially adjustable by screws 14. The mandrels 9 are journalled on the stub shafts by ball and roller or needle bearings and engage segmental arcuate drive surfaces 16 fitted on a stationary housing 18, the segments being pressed radially inwards by springs 20, Fig. 3. The cap shells are delivered by a shoot 36 and are fed into recesses 37 of a register plate 38 rotating with the turret, by means of eccentric surfaces 39 on the plate. Each shell is then held against its mandrel during the curling and beading of the skirt of the cap by a clamp 25 rotatably mounted in a spring-loaded block 28 which is fitted in a slide 29. The slide is axially movable in a sleeve 31 of a spider 32 secured on the driving-shaft and has a roller 34 engaging a face cam 33 on the housing. As the turret rotates, the rotating caps engage without rubbing on segmental arcuate dies 22 of the same extent as the rubbing surfaces 16 and adjustably secured to the housing by bolts 23a and screws 24. The first three segments are eccentric to the axis of the shaft 4, so that the bead and curl are formed gradually, and the last finishing segment is concentric and of a length corresponding to one revolution of the mandrel. At the end of the last segment, a part 33a of the cam 33 withdraws the clamd 25 from the mandrel and a stripper 42 attached to each slide 29 puns off the cap, which then falls on to a shoot 47 or a conveyer belt.
