Abstract

Enzyme-containing granules for incorporation in a detergent composition are produced by spraying an aqueous solution or suspension of a cellulose ether on to a dry blend consisting of (A) a hydratable, anhydrous or partially hydrated alkali metal salt of an inorganic or organic acid, said salt when hydrated being a conventional inorganic component or an organic sequestering agent component of a detergent composition, and (B) a powdered enzyme and, while effecting the spraying step, granulating the blend with thorough agitation. The enzymes may be proteases, esterases, carbohydrases, nucleases, oxidoreductases, transferases, desmolases or isomerases in proportions of 0.1 to 10 per cent of the blend. The cellulose ether may be carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose or methylhydroxyethyl cellulose in proportions of 0.1 to 10 per cent of the dry blend. The salt may be the lithium, sodium, potassium or ammonium salt of sulphuric acid, a polyphosphoric acid, nitrilotriacetic acid or ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid. The alkali metal salt may be sodium tripolyphosphate with a phase I content of at most 80% and may contain up to 3% water of hydration. Specifications 1,151,748 and 1,156,238 are referred to.
