Abstract
A mould has an inner layer defining a mould cavity and made of a fired ceramic material comprising a particulate refractory material bonded by a refractory bonding agent, an intermediate layer comprising a refractory material in association with carbonaceous material derived from the combustion of a thermoset resin, and an outer layer made of particulate refractory material bonded by a thermoset resin. It may be made by immersing a hot ceramic shell mould in a fluidized bed of refractory material precoated with a thermosettable combustible resin. In an example, the ceramic shell mould is produced by applying successive coatings of a slurry of sillimanite in hydrolysed ethyl silicate solution and a stucco of sillimanite to a wax pattern, the assembly dried in a stream of warm air, the pattern removed by treatment in a steam autoclave and the mould fired at 1050 C.
