Abstract
An electrically ignitable solid low explosive charge 18 particularly for use in explosively actuated stud driving tools comprises, fibrous nitrocellulose compacted to a density of not more than 1À6 gms./c.c. to provide a pellet having substantially interconnected interstitial air spaces between its fibres to form continuous burning surfaces, and an electric conductor 26 extending through the pellet between opposite faces for effecting ignition by resistance heating, the conductor being of a material and dimensions selected to produce substantially no residue upon explosion of the charge. The density of a portion of the pellet contiguous with the conductor is less than the density of other remote portions. The end faces of the pellet are planar or recessed. The conductor 26 may be a copper. tungsten, or nickel/chromium wire whose ends 28 are embedded in the end faces of the pellet, The conductor 26 may also be a rod of graphite. Diameters of the rod and wire are specified.
