Abstract
Apparatus for trimming and electrically connecting the ends of wires comprises, a connector crimping die 82, 84 and a crimping anvil 62, 64, means for moving the die and the anvil relatively towards and away from one another, means 90, 901 to co-operate with the die for trimming the wire ends during initial relative movement of the die and anvil towards one another, and a wire positioning device, 126, 1261 disposed on each side of the anvil, each device 126, 1261 being adapted to hold one of the wires, move the wire end when trimmed towards the anvil and position the trimmed wire end in a substantially U-section uncrimped electrical connector 14 supported on the anvil. Wires 6, 8 of a twisted pair 2 are laced through the device 126, then led through notches 96, 98 in the shear member 90, through the cavities of dies 82, 84 and through a gap 45a between bosses 45 of a frame 44. The wires 10, 12 of a second pair 4 are similarly led from the device 1261 to the gap 45a. A handle (52) is rotated through a complete revolution to cause plates 32, 34 to move downwardly and then upwardly, Fig. 2 (not shown). During the initial part of their downward movement, die blocks 58, 60 are swung about pins 66, 68 by the action of cam rollers 70, 701 on cam surfaces 74, 741. The members 90, 901 are moved relatively downwardly along surfaces 67, 69 by bell-cranks 108 as the die blocks swing towards each other, thereby trimming the ends of the wires and leaving them projecting obliquely into the cavities of the dies 82, 84, Fig. 5. Further movement of the plates 33, 34 causes relative upward movement of an arm 78, which engages fingers 140 thereby rotating the positioning devices 126, 1261 and the wire ends upwardly to place them in connectors 14, which are held by clips 63. At the end of the downward stroke of the plates 33, 34, the dies 82, 84 bend over the upstanding side walls of the connectors thereby securing the wires in pairs of aligned slots 22 in the connectors, the edges of the slots penetrating the wire insulation to establish electrical contact, Fig. 17 (not shown). The plates 32, 34 are then returned to their initial positions and the crimped connectors removed from the clips 63. The plates are returned either by return springs (not shown) or by an arrangement of cams as described in Specification 1,176,104.
