Abstract

A sectional boiler comprises elements in aligned abutting relationship, each pair of adjacent elements defining therebetween a number of tapering ducts provided with fins integral therewith and at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis thereof. The sectional boiler comprises intermediate elements 100, Fig. 6, formed with channels 101 on one face, and similar channels 102, Fig. 7, on the opposite face. End elements (not shown) are provided with channels on one face only. When the elements are connected together, adjoining channels 101, 102 combine to form vertical tapering ducts for the combustion gases, and the lower portions 108 of the elements define a furnace 111, or at least a portion thereof. Heat-transfer fins 114 in channels 101 are of opposite inclination to similar fins 115 in channels 102 so as to form helical threads in each duct. Cylindrical lugs 104, 109 on the elements provide inlet ducts 105 and outlet ducts 110 for the water. From the inlet ducts 105, the water passes via the interior of the hollow portion 108 of each element to the hollow interior 103 and thence to the outlet duct 110. In another embodiment, in which the elements do not comprise the furnace, the heat-transfer fins of the two halves of each vertical duct are of opposite helical pitch and are offset with respect to each other.
