Abstract

A cell 1 for irradiating a sample 20 in a sodium-cooled reactor comprises an inner cylindrical shell 2 separated from an outer shell 6 by an annular space 10, the bottom of the cell having a duct 5 and the top of the cell being closed by a cap 12 screwed at 15 on to the shell 6. A space 18 between the cap 12 and ends of the shells 2, 6 is connected by an opening 17 to the space 10 and by an opening 19 to the exterior of the cell. In use, the cell is lowered by a handling boss 16 into the reactor, the cell first passing through an argon atmosphere provided above the sodium pool and then entering the liquid sodium. The sodium enters the cell through the duct 5 and the argon gas remains trapped in the spaces 10, 18, this gas acting as a heat-insulating medium and enabling the temperature of the sodium within the cell to rise above that existing outside. Although the sodium enters the opening 19 when the cell is completely immersed, the sodium level within the space 18 does not rise to the level of the opening 17.
