Abstract

In a walking beam furnace having metal members 5 extending along the full length of a charge chamber 1, which members are able to move in both the vertical and longitudinal directions, the members 5 are provided along the part of their length on the side of a charge insertion opening 3 with a refractory coating 11, upstanding from which are columns 16 which support stringers 17, and along the complementary part of their length on the side of a charge drawing opening 4 with a step 12 supporting a refractory coating 13, the stringers 17 forming extensions of the coating 13. As shown in Fig. 2, the walking beam is flanked by fixed hearth elements which include in the region of the mobile stringers 17, fixed stringers 18 likewise supported by columns (19, Fig. 3) and bearing against the uprights through the medium of spacers 20, while in the region of coating 13 the fixed hearth elements are provided with a refractory layer 21. A rectangular liquid channel 22 is provided beneath the level of the members 5 and has dipping into it a sealing skirt formed with relatively low portions 23 in the area of coating 11 and taller portions 24 in the area of coating 13, the tops of these skirt portions joining leaktightly to said coatings 11 and 13. In another embodiment (see Fig. 7, not shown), instead of a single walking beam running through the length of the furnace, the beam is devised in two sections, a first member (5a) supporting the coating 11, a wall 14 and the associated stringers 17 by means of the columns 16, with a second raised member (5b) supporting the coating 13 facing the top of wall 14.
