Abstract
Liquid radio-active effluent is decontaminated by adjusting the pH to 1-3, percolating over activated finely-divided iron at a temperature not exceeding 70 C., raising the pH to 8-10, and treating with a zeolite. The iron may be used in the form of a powder or as steel wool, and may be activated by degreasing and contacting with a Cu, Ni, Co and/or Mn salt solution, or by heating in hydrogen at 900 C. As a preliminary step Zr may be precipitated as phosphate or hydroxide. The process is especially useful for treating wastes containing Ru or low activity wastes containing Ru or low activity wastes previously treated by co-precipitation or ion exchange.
