Abstract
A method of continuously supplying an additional charge of metal in the form of scrap into the enclosure of an enothermic refining process, includes charging scrap into a melting space, chamber 3, the lower part of which is in communication with a refining space, chamber 1, via an orifice 10. A pile of scrap is maintained in chamber 3 by a feed from conveyor 13 and is progressively melted owing to the temperature gradient between the refining chamber and the melting chamber. Liquid metal to be refined is added to chamber 1 through orifice 4. The oxygen jet from lance 6 produces a foam of refined metal and slag which over-flows into chamber 2 the slag settles and is withdrawn via orifice 8 while the underlying molten metal flows over spout 9. The rate of feed of scrap may be adjusted depending on the rate of melting, so as to obtain a steady position of the melting front. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) refining is carried out in the refining chamber by oxygen blown through a porous element in the base of the chamber as well as through the lance, and also by oxygen blown through a porous element in the base of the settling chamber
