Abstract

A crank-shaft is forged from a billet 1 by a pair of dies 4, 5 which are held in a movable die block 2 and a fixed crosshead 3 respectively and the die block is moved in a direction at an angle to the billet axis to upset the billet and form a crank-shaft web between the dies. The size of the web may be determined by the volume of the billet or by a retaining die ring 6 so that the dies 4, 5 and the ring form a closed die. The bearing faces of the dies 4, 5 may be initially non-parallel, Fig. 7 (not shown), so that the crank-pins formed are non-parallel when the dies are abutted. A double set of tie-rods or columns 9, 10 are provided to absorb the forging load and intersect at the centre of gravity of the formed web. The die block 2 is raised by piston-cylinder assembly 8 and slides on a slideway 12 of the press frame 11. The apparatus can be modified for multi-throw crank-shaft forging, Fig. 10 (not shown). This apparatus comprises a pair of two-part dies (14), (15), mounted in a fixed crosshead (17) and a slide (16). The crosshead and slide each have apertures (18), (19) aligned with the die apertures to allow axial movement of the billet for the separate forging of each throw. The billet is rotated about its axis and/or a transverse axis after each forging to correctly position the crankpins. The billet may be forged hot or cold and heaters in the form of induction heaters or gas burners may be provided in the device.
