Abstract
Steam reforming of saturated and unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons with boiling points below 350 C is effected in the presence of a catalyst comprising 8-45% NiO on Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , ZrO 2 , B 2 O 3 , ThO 2 , TiO 2 , SrO or HfO 2 or mixtures thereof, with minor proportions of oxides of Ba, K, Ca or Mg and with calcium aluminates, clays or cements, the catalyst being so composited that it has a surface area of less than 1 m2/gm and a porosity less than 0.25. Examples describe the preparation and use of catalysts containing (1) calcium aluminate cement, NiO and Al 2 O 3 and (2) calcium aluminate cement, NiO, Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 .
