Trifluoromethyl diazonium compounds of formula where R 1 is cycloalkyl or aralkyl with up to 10 carbon atoms, R 2 is alkyl or hydroxyalkyl with 1 to 3 carbon atoms or R 1 and R 2 complete a 6- or 7-membered heterocyclic ring and X is an anion are prepared by reacting the appropriate amine or heterocyclic base with 5-chloro-2- nitro-trifluoromethyl benzene and then reducing and diazotizing the compound obtained.
